Imagine observing yourself on any given day.

What do you see?

Most likely, what you’ll notice is a lot of action.

We’re always rushed and in constant competition with others and with ourselves.

Constantly working to exceed expectations and outperform.

It’s just how the world works today.

But, while the desire for perpetual self-improvement through over-performance is honorable.

Self-development also requires you to take a step back every now and then.

Just like you would allow your muscles a day or two to repair micro-tears caused by an intense workout, your mind also needs rest days.

And if not days… at least rest moments.

Taking into account that we constantly create scenarios of what could potentially go wrong in any given situation.

Which just creates unnecessary pressure.

So, not allowing ourselves some breathing room will eventually cause unwanted consequences.

Which we all know as stress and anxiety.

Not much fun, right?

These are signs that our minds need a break.

And that maybe we need to re-assess our approach.

So, in this post, we’re going to look at how meditation can help you to have the clarity to handle situations how you want to.

..And not how we’ve been programmed to.

Take a look at the video I made on this…

How Meditation Can Help You

Allowing yourself a moment to unwind from your thoughts, worries, and daily activities helps in so many ways.

When you allow your mind a moment to recollect and reconnect, it works like a reset button.

That’s why meditating consistently can do wonders for your ability to focus and achieve what you desire.

It also helps to redirect where your energy back to what’s really important.

Allowing stress and anxiety to consume our energy happens very quickly and without warning.

So, being conscious of our wondering thoughts and energy is incredibly important.

That’s what meditation is so powerful in helping us do.

While redirecting that energy to actually doing the things you want to do will have much more positive, real-life effects.

When you’re able to become really present when meditating, your mind becomes calmer.

Your thoughts become clearer and you can finally cut through all the noise in your head.

You’ll be better able to sift through the unnecessary bat-shit crazy thoughts to focus on what’s important.

Meditation also teaches you, that you’re not your thoughts or your emotions.

It’s important to understand that you’re not defined by your thoughts and fears.

Also, you can control them.

It’s either them controlling us, or us controlling them.

We can choose which side of the fence we want to be on.

Putting aside 5-15 minutes every day to meditate will enhance your ability to make this choice.

Over time, creating a consistent meditation practice will help improve your quality of life in so many ways.

From your sleep quality to decision-making abilities, your performance, health, and your self-confidence.

Plus, and possibly most importantly…

Your ability to control your emotions and become who you’ve always wanted to be.

Proven Benefits of Meditation

It helped me overcome a lot of insecurities that have held me back so much in life.

From a young age, I’ve always been pretty ambitious and driven to become the best version of myself.

But, not having belief or confidence in myself made this very difficult.

facing your insecurities- becoming your best self with meditation

It held me back from doing things I knew I should do to improve.

I struggled with things like anxiety, being un-confident, and a lack of self-worth.

I wasn’t able to feel truly happy.

Having these negative beliefs kept me in a bubble.

I always avoided putting myself out there too much for fear of judgment, for fear of what other people are going to say.

Until one day I came to the realization that if I wanted to be happy, then I needed to change.

So began my quest…

I decided to ask my wise and all-knowing mentor some questions… (Google)

I went down many rabbit holes trying to find the answer to my question…

How do I overcome my insecurities?

How do I become the best version of myself?

How do I control my thoughts?

…And so on.

I read about neuroscience, spirituality, mind control techniques and more.

At one point, I came to a realization.

I noticed that the videos and articles mostly all led to one thing.

One powerful thing that can really help you overcome insecurities and control your emotions.

 …That one thing was meditation.

And that’s when I realized this could actually be what I was looking for.

So, I started to meditate.

From the beginning, I made it a point to always remind myself of my intentions and why I really wanted to do it.

Constantly reminding myself I wanted to become the best version of myself helped keep me consistent.

Especially on those off days when I felt unmotivated, unfocused and like I could make up any excuse under the sun.

I just kept that clear intention in mind and pushed through.

Six years later, I can definitely say it was worth it.

I’m happy to have meditation as a tool that I have used on my path to becoming my best self.

The person that I was before I started to meditate, compared to the person I am now has changed so much.

Meditation has helped me overcome many insecurities and become content with who I am.

It’s had a massive impact on my life.

And I’m still working on improving myself every day.

You don’t necessarily reach a point where you can just say…

Ok, I’m done… I am enlightened.

I don’t need to do anything else.

But, It’s a constant journey.

Types of Meditation for Becoming Your Best Self

The best approach to meditating consistently that I’ve found is to try different techniques and see which one you like the most.

The meditation technique I eventually gravitated towards was mindfulness meditation.

There are different forms of it like focus, awareness, sensation, etc.

Mindfulness meditation is great because it’s easy to do anywhere and in any place.

You can do it in the park, in line at the bank, or at home in your meditation spot.

Another meditation technique that I have learned a lot from is loving-kindness meditation.

This has helped me to become happier with who I am, more compassionate and understanding towards others.

Another good option is transcendental meditation.

Transcendental meditation is more spiritual and uses mantras to help focus the mind.

The main idea is to sit still and breathe slowly while trying to focus on rising above your emotions.

It’s something that I’ve tried but didn’t stick with.

These are only a few examples of effective techniques.

There are plenty more for you to try, like Zen meditation, Vipassana, body scan.

Real-Life Applications of Meditation for Self-Improvement

You may be wondering what the benefits of meditating consistently look like in real life.

I’ll give you some examples from my own experience.

Let’s say I have a big deadline coming soon at work and I can feel anxiety creeping up.

One option my older self would have preferred would be to panic…

Freak out, get angry, and frustrated.

Now, thanks to what I’ve learned from my meditation I’m able to take a step back.

Where I can calmly assess the situation and handle it in the best way possible…

Another thing I learned from my practice is to use my breath.

Whenever I feel anxious I breathe deep into my stomach (diaphragmatic breathing) rather than my chest.

I simply take a few deep breaths in and out.

This allows me to calm down and see the bigger picture rather than freak out.

Say you’re taking a walk in the park on a spring day.

You notice it’s beautiful and sunny.

But, your mind is often everywhere but in the park on that beautiful sunny day.

Meditation can take enjoying that moment to the next level.

To really appreciate it.

It helps you to become more mindful in everyday life.

Next time you’re in the park, take a few deep breaths.

Notice how your body feels.

With the sun and breeze on your face.

Just allow yourself a moment to feel, enjoy and relax.

It’ll work wonders to reset your energy levels and boost your happiness.

For me, the best use of what I’ve learned from meditation is controlling my emotions in social settings.

I used to find it hard to talk in front of people or just genuinely be myself around others.

The confidence I’ve gained from meditation has allowed me to be able to connect and engage with others at a much deeper level.

Something that’s only possible (I believe) when you’re truly content with yourself.

My advice to you if you’re looking to become the best version of yourself is to think about what your best self looks like.

How do you interact with people?

How do you feel and react in different situations?

Answering these questions will help you define what your intentions are.

And if you keep these intentions in mind and remind yourself of them every day.

Then, meditating daily will become second nature to you because you’re aware of what you really want.

…And also how you can get it.
